MARQUETTE – Dale Fritter of Marquette is the first student at Northern Michigan University to be awarded one of the nation’s most prestigious scholarships by the Harry S. Truman Foundation of Washington, D.C. Fritter, a native Californian who has made his home in the Upper Peninsula for the past five years, has been awarded a $30,000 scholarship by the Truman Foundation. A former Baraga resident, Fritter is majoring in social work.

IRONWOOD – A picture of Taps Lake on Minke Lake Road, in the Marenisco area of Gogebic County, has been selected by a large publishing firm to grace the cover of its advertising magazine. The picture, taken by Gilbert Woodcock of Ironwood, was selected by the firm from thousands of entries submitted by various schools for the annuals. Woodcock said he has taken pictures for the Wakefield High School annual and that the one of Taps Lake was selected for its cover.
