MARQUETTE — Although some of the deer living at Marquette’s Presque Isle Park have been shot illegally in the city limits, plenty of whitetails remain in the park population. A recent survey turned up about 50 whitetails at the park. At least 25 of them spent the winter in the park, including five antlered bucks. An 8-pointer that is now almost 3 years old is the only remaining one of the three 8-pointers that roamed the park last fall. The herd includes one other 3-year-old buck, the one with the crooked neck, and he only had 3-point antlers due to his deformity. Despite his handicap, however, that buck is doing fine. Three more bucks that are almost 2 years old are also part of the population. The former 6-point’s left front leg was injured during the rut last fall and healed with the lower leg bent backward so the deer can no longer use it, but that animal also survived the winter in good shape. Most of the deer population living in the park consists of does and fawns. A higher percentage of the fawns born at Presque Isle were does this year than the past two years. The albino doe has remained in the park all winter along with the white doe fawn she gave birth to last year.

ISHPEMING — Milder weather has brought another problem to Ishpeming, Police Chief Frank Sarvello said today. He referred to the increasing number of “skate boards,” the latest innovation from toy manufacturers. Youngsters using these new devices present a safety hazard. “Youngsters with ‘skate boards’ are urged to refrain from using them on city streets and sidewalks because of the possibility of injury to themselves, to motorists and pedestrians,” Chief Sarvello said, adding that he anticipated an influx of these “fads.” “Before we have a large number of injuries, we urge youngsters and parents to be aware of the hazard.” The chief suggested that the Ishpeming playgrounds is an ideal area to operate this type of device. Police have observed youngsters taking chances by riding down hills, using skate boards in much the same manner as a skier would on a snow-covered slope. Youngsters also were cautioned about the use of go-carts. Their operation on city streets is a violation of a city ordinance. There are no streets designated for operation of these carts.
