MARQUETTE — Vice President Al Gore will stump for U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak next week, the Democratic congressman’s campaign said Thursday. Gore’s Nov. 4 visit to Marquette is part of a Clinton administration effort to bolster Democratic turnout in the Nov. 8 election, Stupak said in a statement. “Having the vice president in the Upper Peninsula will really put the focus on this election,” said Stupak, of Menominee. He is seeking a second term and is opposed by Republican businessman Gil Ziegler. Gore and President Clinton also plan to visit Michigan next week to campaign for Senate nominee Bob Carr. Core was last in the Upper Peninsula two years ago during the presidential election campaign. He visited the area while running for president himself in 1988

MARQUETTE — An investigation made by City Det. Marvin J. Gauthier disclosed that a case in which a Marquette boy allegedly was tied to a signal pole over the Soo Line Railroad Co. Tracks Sunday was a prank, it was reported today. Police had been notified Sunday that a boy, 14, was found tied to the signal pole near the Marquette Chamber of Commerce building, A thick rope had been used to lace the boy to the pole and his hands were tied behind his back. The boy was found hanging five feet above the tracks and released by a Soo Line employee. At first the boy said two older persons who he had never seen before had tied him to the tracks and left him. Chief of Police George G. Johnson said. However, the chief added, the boy admitted under questioning by Gauthier that he himself had asked a younger boy, 13 to tie him to the tracks as a prank, apparently to scare railroad employees. Police said the “victim” had climbed onto a pole, five feet up, and had the other boy wrap the 40-foot rope around his legs, up to his body and shoulders. He then had the younger boy tie his hands around his back.
