MARQUETTE — Greg Trick, anchorman of the TV6 News Extra and TV6 Late News, presented a check for $3,200 to Paul Meyers of the Hiawathaland Boy Scout Council and Paula Susmark of the Peninsula Waters Girl Scout Council. The money was raised through the TV6 News poll, where Upper Peninsula viewers can register their opinions about issues twice a week. A fee is charged for the telephone call to vote on issues, with money donated to various organizations. “We join the Boy and Girl Scouts in thanking the people of the U.P. for their generosity,” said Brad Van Sluyters, TV6 vice president and general manager. The next scheduled recipient of TV6 News poll funds will be the Spouse Abuse Shelters of Upper Michigan.

MARQUETTE — The naming of three buildings on the Northern Michigan University campus was announced last night by Dr. Edgar L. Harden, president. The physical education building, which includes a fieldhouse, gymnasium and natatorium, will be named the C.B. Hedgcock Building in honor of a legend in the fields of physical education and athletics at Northern, Harden said. C.B. Hedgcock was head of the department of health, physical education and recreation. Two units of the new residence hall quadrangle at NMU will be named in honor of Luther O. Gant, former head of admissions at NMU, and Grace A. Spalding, former head of the university’s art department. Luther O. Gant served Northern for 42 years as teacher, registrar, and director of admissions. Gant joined the NMU faculty in 1917 as a mathematics instructor and varsity coach. In 1926 he was appointed registrar. In 1956, he was named director of admissions, until he retired in 1959. Grace A. Spalding came to Northern in 1903 and retired in 1938, having served 35 years as a teacher and head of the art department. She died in 1957, and a student loan fund was established in her name in 1958. Names of the buildings have been approved by the university’s board of control.
