MARQUETTE — More than 20,000 people applied for the 5,096 bear harvest tags available in Michigan this year, according to DNR bear program leader Tim Reis in Lansing. Successful applicants in the state’s eight bear management units, seven of which are in the U.P., were notified during July. Hunters who applied for the experimental third hunt only being offered in the Gwinn Unit this year were by far the most successful. A total of 430 permits were available for the Sept 25 through Oct. 25 season, and only 547 people elected to try for one of those tags. All permits were issued in a random drawing.
