MARQUETTE — Haphazard development in the past forced the Whetstone Creek to flow underground, but efforts are underway to liberate the Marquette-area creek. Part of a multi-year project on the Whetstone involves recovering portions of the stream that have been buried in culverts, said Rich Beasley, who coordinates the Whetstone Creek Watershed Project for the Marquette County Soil and Water Conservation District. The watershed has had problems with excessive storm water run-off and spring snowmelt, because of large impervious surfaces such as parking lots, and contaminants leaking into the stream. “We want to increase environmental awareness in the area.” Beasley said. “We’re targeting areas where there has been a lot of litter problems, such as parking lots.”

MARQUETTE — Marquette mail delivery carriers have received high praise from Postmaster John S. Courtney for earning a safety citation from Donald L. Swanson, Chicago regional director for the U. S. Post Office Department. Courtney said, it was with “much pleasure” he offered his “thanks and congratulations for the safety award for meritorious performance in motor vehicle accident prevention during the fiscal year 1964” to five fulltime drivers. Regional Director Swanson stated it was “especially gratifying to honor Marquette Post Office drivers in view of the difficult traffic and adverse weather conditions.”
