MUNISING — The Alger Underwater Preserve Committee has hit a snag in its effort to sink a tugboat as a sport diving attraction in Munising Bay. Concerned about safety and liability risk, the Munising Coty Commission voted last week to ask the preserve to remove the tug, the Steven M. Selvick, from the city dock by Sept. 1. Earlier this year, the commission gave Peter Lindquist, president of the preserve, permission to moor the Selvick at the city dock until volunteers could refurbish the tug for sinking in 1995. “We’ve been working for over 10 years on this idea of sinking a vessel in the preserve.” Lindquist said. “We’ve been working with everybody on this and we’re going to do it and do it right.”

MARQUETTE — Marquette will record its largest railroad fans club visit of the year during the Labor Day weekend, when the Illini Rail Fans Club, which has already included Marquette in one excursion, schedules its last appearance of the season. Between 300 and 400 persons are expected here to ride the Marquette & Huron Mountain railroad from Marquette to Big Bay. Promotional advertising has already gone out from Chicago to all steam rail fans and the word has been passed to Marquette rail officials to anticipate at least triple the number here in July.

Starting at $3.23/week.
