TRAVERSE CITY — Debris spotted with a human body near the Edmund Fitzgerald wreckage last month appears to be cork blocks from a life preserver, says leader of the group that explored the site at the bottom of Lake Superior. The find suggest the crewmen may have known they were in trouble before the ore-laden ship sank in 1975. Previously, no trace had been found of the sailors killed when the Fitzgerald succumbed to a monstrous storm Nov. 10, 1975.

MARQUETTE — City police today issued warning against the destruction or removal of highway reflector buttons on U.S. 41 and M-28 bypass in Marquette. Within the past week around 27 of the reflector buttons have been either destroyed or removed, according to Matt Tervola, assistant city police chief. “This is a dangerous situation because if a lot of the buttons are removed the motorists going on the highway at night won’t be able to judge the roadway as well,” Tervola said. “Anyone discovered doing this damage will be prosecuted,” he warned.
