ISHPEMING — Like life, turning 100 years old has its ups and downs, said Eva Hamel Rochon of Ishpeming Tuesday while celebrating a century on Earth. “It is sad to be 100 years old because God doesn’t want me and the devil won’t take me. I can’t go up or down so I stay here and wait,” said Rochon, whose only devilish quality may be her sense of humor. Hard work, no tobacco, rarely a drink, a sense of humor and ‘tons’ of pasties are some of Rochon’s secrets of life. She was born in Champion on August 9th, 1894.

MARQUETTE — Sixteen residents of Marquette are among 28 in this county who have been licensed as amateur radio operators and are members of the Marquette County Radio Operators’ club. There are more than 80 radio “hams” in the Upper Peninsula and all have been invited to attend a picnic sponsored by the Marquette county club to be held Sunday. The equipment owned by the radio “hams” ranges from simple sets to elaborate paraphernalia. Some of the “hams” have communicated with England, Spain, Portugal, Africa, Panama, Peru, Hawaii, and Alaska.
