MARQUETTE — Thousands of green insect traps attached to Upper Peninsula trees and poles are helping biologists gauge and perhaps slow the advance of the leaf-eating gypsy moth. Since 1993, an intensive gypsy moth trapping and public education project has sought to keep the months within or behind the current zone of advance across northern Michigan. The battle line runs from Munising south to Manistique and includes western sections of Alger and Delta Counties. In Lower Michigan in 1993, over 500,000 acres were defoliated at nearly have that amount had to be sprayed with a pesticide.

MARQUETTE — Almost three and a quarter million tons of iron ore have been shipped from Marquette’s two ore docks this season. Tonnage last month pushed the total for the year to 3,224,028, loaded in 270 ships. At this time last year, the tonnage was 2,564,769. Agents at the two ore docks attribute the increase so far this year to the early start in the shipping season. In addition to the early season opening, total shipping figures for the month of July surpassed tonnage figures for the same month last year.
