Get out vote walk set
WATERSMEET — At a.m. Sunday, a group of community organizers, tribal citizens and local grassroots leaders will host a Get Out the Native Vote Awareness Walk, starting at the Northern Waters Casino Event Center in Watersmeet.
Indigenous people form a crucial voting block in Michigan, a swing state where elections can be decided by razor-thin margins.
Organizing the Indigenous community in the Upper Peninsula is a significant turning point in the region’s history and could play a major role in the outcome of upcoming elections.
The group will walk from the center to the reservation and back, and will feature speakers, and will provide voter registration information and give attendees a space to discuss and prepare for the elections together.
The walk is being hosted by We the People Michigan’s Waasamowin chapter, the Ojibwe word for Lightning, which is building multiracial, working class, and Indigenous local power to fight for tribal sovereignty and an energy system that meets the needs of ordinary people.
