MUNISING — An $8,600 state grant will help build a fishing pier at the mouth of the Anna River in Munising. The city received the grant from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Coastal Management Program. The grant will be matched locally with in-kind services. City Manager Judy Slancik said the funds should be received in October, but construction of the pier won’t begin until after spring fishing in 1995.

ALGER — A northern pike caught itself in Alger County the other day. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sloan of Escanaba were fishing on Stella Lake in southern Alger County. They were trolling and had caught two pike when, according to Sloan, “Suddenly a fish broke water and 22-inch pike leaped into the boat and hit me on the leg. We kept the two pike and put the 22-inch fish back in the lake,” Sloan added.

Starting at $3.23/week.
