MARQUETTE — Researchers are trying to slow the spread of the gypsy moth in the Upper Peninsula by setting traps for the males. The Gypsy Moth ‘Slow the Spread’ project is underway in the UP, Virginia, and North Carolina. Green triangular cardboard traps have been set in a 20-mile-wide area that runs from Munising, to Escanaba and Manistique. Officials hope UP landowners will cooperate with the project being conducted by the US department of Agriculture, the Hiawatha National Forest, and the Department of Natural Resources.

CHOCOLAY TOWNSHIP — Nearly 150 people – mostly citizens 65 years and up – attended last night’s program which opened the Chocolay Township centennial celebration. An atmosphere of reminiscence prevailed, as residents who had lived in Chocolay many years brought tales from the township’s past to life. Among those who recollected out loud were Bertha Mukkala, township treasurer; Carmen Ewing, co-chairman of the centennial with Sam Billings; Chester Bigmalll William Reader, Leo Zerbel, and Mrs. A. C. Bordeau
