MARQUETTE — More than half a million dollars in federal grant money will help Northern Michigan University train nurse practitioners to bring medical care to isolated rural areas in the Upper Peninsula. The three-year, $592,798 grant from the U.S, Department of Health and Human Services will help NMU’s College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences offer a master’s degree program in nursing and family health care. NMU’s College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences offers a master’s degree program in nursing and family health care. “This grant is the next step in the idea of guaranteeing health care to those in rural communities,” said Perrin Fenske, NMU’s director of research and development, who helped nursing officials apply for the grant. “It really augments their budget and allows them to do some different things” NMU’s College of Nursing and Allied Health Schiences now offers two tracks to the 65 students in the nursing master’s degree program and this grant will enable the college to offer a third track

MARQUETTE — Bids for construction of the St. Mary’s Hospital 16-patient psychiatric treatment center will be opened tomorrow afternoon at 2 in the hospital. Estimated cost of psychiatric unit is $300,000. Federal funds, through the Hill-Burton Act, have been granted to finance one-half of the cost of the building. The unit will feature eight double patient-rooms a lounge and dining area, an outdoor terrace and courtyard, therapy and recreation rooms and a centralized nursing station. The one-floor, ground-level construction will be connected by “T” section to the south side of the existing hospital.
