Pickle Barrel House

MARQUETTE — Burt Township’s Pickle Barrel House is one of the Upper Peninsula’s most unique landmarks, both in its style and its history.

Built in 1926, the two story cabin is built to resemble two wooden barrels and was designed as a summer getaway for well-known cartoonist of the 1920’s William Donahey.

Donahey was the author and illustrator of a popular comic strip called “Teenie Weenies” which was about tiny people who lived in a pickle barrel. The popularity of the comic turned into a promotional advertisement for pickles, which led to the creation of the cabin.

Over the years, the structure has had many lives, including being home to an ice cream stand, a gift shop and an information kiosk.

The Pickle Barrel House still operates today as a museum.

The unique building was recognized as a Michigan Historic Home and has been added to both the Michigan and National Registers of Historic Places.
