MARQUETTE — Gov. John Engler will ask President Clinton this week to declare a federal disaster in 10 Michigan counties. Engler will ask for federal assistance to relieve the $5.6 million in water system damages caused by sub-zero temperatures. In some areas, a record freeze pushed the frost level 10-feet deep, bursting water and sewer mains. The declaration would open the pipeline for federal dollars to replenish local government budgets that have been drained because of the crisis.

MARQUETTE — A public hearing will be conducted by the city commission on a request for an increase in taxicab fares in the city. It is expected that the hearing will be conducted during the last regular commission meeting this month. The request for an amendment to the city ordinance regulating taxi fares was made to the city commission Monday night in a petition from the owner of Queen City Taxi Co. For each of the 60, 70 and 85-cent zones in the city, a 10-cent increase is requested.
