Plant symposium speaker set

HOUGHTON — Naturalist and television host David Mizejewski of the National Wildlife Federation will deliver the keynote address at the Seventh Annual Keweenaw Native Plant Symposium set for 9 a.m.-noon March 23 on Zoom.

Mizejewski will share how to create a beautiful landscape that fits into the local ecosystem and supports birds, butterflies, bees and a whole host of other wildlife. Mizejewski makes regular appearances to promote wildlife conservation and has appeared on Animal Planet, NBC, ABC, HGTV, Sundance Channel, The Weather Channel, History, PBS and CNN.

The symposium also includes talks by two Upper Peninsula experts. Maddie McDonnell of the Marquette Natural Resources Conservation District will review the native gardens the district is establishing in Marquette County and discuss how homeowners can implement those practices in their own yards. Dr. Sigrid Resh of the Keweenaw Invasive Species Management Unit (KISMA) will introduce “Go Beyond Beauty,” a statewide project supporting nurseries that pledge not to sell highly invasive plants.
