MARQUETTE — The UP200 Sled Dog Championship has turned many Superiorland residents into avid mushing fans, including Stan Wittler of Chocolay Township. But unlike most people who help out with the race, Wittler pays less attention to the dogs than the race course itself. As the official trail boss for the popular championship, Wittler is responsible for making sure the course is groomed, marked and generally passable. This year, he said, the trail which runs from Marquette to Escanaba and back, should be in excellent shape. “The cold has been real good for the trail,” Wittler said. “One of the trouble spots in the past has been the Ford River, but I was on it the other day and it’s frozen from bank to bank.”

MARQUETTE — Five hundred high school seniors, representing 35 schools, are expected to visit Northern Michigan University tomorrow, when Northern conducts its 11th annual senior guest day. Edward Havlik, NMU student council president, will welcome the students at the first general meeting in Kaye Auditorium at 9:30 a.m. which will be followed by musical selections from “Carousel.” University counsellors will meet with students for a general discussion of college life and the visitors will also have the opportunity to obtain specific information about subjects and curricula in which they are particularly interested.
