EAGLE RIVER — A land use map that had been slated for approval by the Keweenaw County board of commissioners Tuesday night is instead on its way back to the planning and zoning commission. The board sent the map back to the commission for reconsideration after hearing protests that the members of that body had acted improperly in passing it. The map is intended as a guide in making zoning and land use decisions. At a Dec. 28 hearing, the planning commission voted to accept the land use map and send it on to the county board for final approval. But, after attorney Hunter Watson of Ahmeek read a letter to the county board explaining that it had no authority to approve the map, the commissioners sent the map back. County Attorney Paul Tomasi confirmed Watson’s reading of state law on the subject. In the letter, Watson also accused the planning commission of avoiding public opinion on the map and violating the Open Meetings Act at its December meeting. “[Holding] a hearing in the moral equivalent of the dead of night…is indicative of a desire to avoid public input,” the letter said.

ISHPEMING — An invitation has been extended by the Bethany Lutheran Church to view colored slides and movies filmed by the Rev. Eskil E. Bostrom and his wife on a trip to Europe last summer. The showings will be made in Fellowship Hall of the new church on Mather and Hickory Sts. Sunday, Jan. 19, beginning at 7 p.m. From the iron ore country of Lapland, Sweden, and the land of the midnight sun and cascading waterfalls of Norway to the catacombs of Rome, the Bostroms traveled in 10 countries of Western Europe. Points of interest included the eternal snows of the Swiss Alps; the romantic road from Munich to Nuremberg, Germany; the “First Disney Land” Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, Denmark; the Shakespeare country of England, and the canals of Amsterdam, Holland. The trip also included sessions at the Lutheran World Federation Assembly in Helsinki, Finland. At the conclusions of the viewing, lunch will be served and a free will offering will be accepted towards completion of the youth room in the new church.
