MARQUETTE -- Deliberation of Marquette Senior High School's new nickname is expected to reach a resolution later this month.
Marquette's Board of Education discussed 34 potential nicknames provided by the MSHS Student Advisory groups.
The following eight were approved: Cardinals, Hawks, Marauders, Reds, Redtail Hawks, Red Hawks, Red Jackets and Sentinels.
Another Marquette County district, Republic-Michigamme Schools, already uses the Hawk nickname; it is unknown if that will play a role in the ulitmate decision of the MSHS school board.
Discussions will continue at at a board meeting on Tuesday with a final decision being made at another meeting on Jan. 22.
The following criteria will be considered: the ideal nickname would pay tribute to the unique aspects of the school district and community and the nickname cannot reference any protected class such as race, gender or religion.
MAPS board members voted 4-3 on July 17 to retire the Redmen and Redettes nicknames following years of heated debate in the community.
The vote to change the nickname has been a source of contreversy, leading to the reported harrassment and efforts to recall two school board members. The recall effort was unsuccessful.
MAPS said it welcomes community input on the decision. Any feedback can be written into the board at schoolboard@mapsnet.org.
