MARQUETTE – The City Commission will begin work tonight on finding alternate sources of revenue. On the agenda is a recommendation for a “Green Ribbon” committee to look over ways to raise cash other than the traditional millage increases that have long been the city’s major source of funds. Methods such as user fees for city services would be among the alternatives for creatively financing city services and projects. Members of the committee would be appointed at large by the commission, which meets at 7 p.m. at city hall.

MARQUETTE – Marquette has ordered its winter’s supply of calcium chloride for use on slippery road surfaces from the Dow Chemical Co. of Midland. Being purchased is 100 tons of calcium chloride flakes, packaged in 100 pound bags. Specifications were made so as to have the chloride meet current Michigan State Highway Department restrictions. Dow’s bid was $4,670. Shipments will be made in 50-ton carloads, with the shipping dates being determined by the city, and prices quoted are F.O.B. Marquette. Under its agreement with the highway department, the city’s public works department must use the chloride on state trunklines within the city. The city receives compensation from the state for maintenance of state trunklines.
