MUNISING — Mather Middle School will have 30 new desks for students next semester. The board last week approved purchase of the desks from the lower of two bidders, Beckly-Cardy of Lansing. The firm bid $75.88 per desk for a total of $2,276.40. Valley School Supply of Green Bay, Wis. submitted a bid of $88 per desk, or $2,640. The desks will be placed in a classroom that currently uses tables and chairs in lieu of desks, said Superintendent Steve Cromell. He said many classrooms have no desks after enrollment increases and no new desk purchases in more than a generation.

NEGAUNEE — Asserting that students were not entirely to blame and that action by school authorities might have averted the walkout last Monday, climaxing the dismissal of J.L. Miller from the high school faculty, John J. Hauserman, one of three men chosen by the “strikers” to represent them at the forthcoming hearing, spoke during the 1:15 assembly period in the high school this afternoon. Reviewing the events which have occurred since last Monday, Mr. Hauserman said that a fair and impartial hearing will be given to Mr. Miller, and told the students to go back to their studies and conduct themselves in an orderly manner with the assurance that “every interest of the student body will be taken care of.”
