CHOCOLAY TOWNSHIP -- Two Upper Peninsula river systems known for their quality trout waters should get even better thanks to federal Clean Water Act grants for the Chocolay River Watershed in Marquette County and the Manistique River Watershed in the eastern U.P. Under the grant program, administered by the state Department of Natural Resources, $34, 732 will go to the Marquette County Soil and Water Conservation District for the Chocolay River project. "The project includes identifying excess sediment (mainly sand) in the 90,000-acre watershed; developing a plan to alleviate sediment, both through removal and by prevention of new sediment; opening up the "thalweg" of the river; and educating riparian landowners," said Mike LaPointe, a Marquette County Soil and Water Conservation District conservationist. The "thalweg" is the deepest point that runs down the middle of a river. When a river has excessive sediment, the thalweg fills in and velocity of a stream is slowed. Instead of the sand being flushed through the system by quick-running water, it settles over gravel spawning areas. This grant will be the catalyst for the project.

ISHPEMING -- Kenneth Walimaa, Ishpeming Township supervisor, announced today that several important items are on the agenda for a township board meeting at 7 tomorrow night in the North Lake School. One of these are the recent decision by the City of Ishpeming to increase water rates for Ishpeming Township, along with other rates also affecting the township, and a progress report on all three contracts for the sewer project. Walimaa also urged all persons interested in metered and unmetered commercial water rates to attend the meeting because "they should be interested in the revision proposals."
