MARQUETTE — It was a wild finish to a “typical” Ishpeming-Marquette boys’ prep basketball game here Tuesday night. Brandon Lawson poured in 29 points, as the visiting Hematites rallied from a 12-point third quarter deficit to edge the Redmen, 67-63, in a non-conference contest. “Traditionally, the Marquette and Ishpeming games are two or three-point games one way of the other,” said MSHS Coach Bill Laurich. In the first quarter, Ishpeming raced to a 19-12 advantage as Lawson scored eight to lead the Hematites. The second quarter was all Marquette, with a 13-0 run behind seven points from Joe Snyder and six from Ben Smith. Marquette went into the break holding a 35-33 lead. “You got to give Marquette all the credit,” HIS coach Jerry Racine said. “They’re a young team, and they play their tails off.” The Redmen showed no sign of letdown during the third quarter as they closed the period with a commanding 54-42 lead Smith and Seth Markantony each scored 15 points for the Redmen. The fourth quarter belonged to Ishpeming, with a 16-3 run and clutch free throw shooting to win the game.
