MARQUETTE — Would be bandits at Younker’s department store in Marquette abandoned more than $200,000 in merchandise late last night when they were scared off by police. The thieves broke through the roof of the store in the Westwood Mall and smashed several jewelry display cases, police said. Before being scared off, they filled up two duffel bags with hundreds of pieces of gold and silver jewelry, according to Debbie Hatcher, Younker’s human resources manager. The thieves also tried to steal several bottles of Polo Cologne valued at $42 each. Store officials spent the morning trying to determine if anything else was missing. Despite extensive damage to the ceiling and numerous jewelry cases, the store was open for business this morning. No arrests have been made, but police are following up on several leads. No other store was burglarized, said sheriff’s Lt. Bruce Belisle.
