MARQUETTE– Marquette County will receive $37,484 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the area. The total is about $7,000 less than last year because the county’s unemployment rate compared more favorably to the national rate last summer than in the summer of 1992. The selection was made by a national board of representatives of several national voluntary relief organizations. The board is chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The county receives money each year from the federal government to help programs such as the Marquette County Food and Fuel Coalition, the Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Harbor House, Janzen House and others. FEMA is expected to give about $130 million in grants to local agencies next year.

NEGAUNEE — Staff members at the Negaunee Public Library handled 4,527 requests for books and periodicals during November, according to the monthly report of Mrs. Caroline Goodhue, librarian, submitted yesterday to City manager Leonard Harris. As has been the case here for several years, the colder weather accompanying the late fall season resulted in increased reading on the part of both adults and children in the community. Mrs. Goodhue noted in her report that 2,524 requests were made by adults and 2,003 by children. Highlighting the month was observance of Children’s Book Week Nov. 10-16. New books were placed on tables where they were easily available to children. Special book markers, which were a miniature of the Book Week poster and contained a verse written for the occasion by John Ciardi, were distributed to all boys and girls visiting the library.
