MARQUETTE — The Marquette City Commission established an 11-person advisory committee to oversee activities and projects at Presque Isle Park. The park currently falls under the jurisdiction of the city’s Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. “Presque Isle Park is our largest tourist attraction in the city and it certainly warrants a special committee,” Barb Kelly, chairwoman of the Marquette Beautification and Restoration Committee, told the commissioners. Fred Huffman, also a member of the beautification committee, said citizens have protested many proposed projects for the island in the past and a special committee would better serve the public’s concerns. “There is an overriding sentiment to preserve and protect the island, and at times that sentiment was overlooked,” Huffman said. The committee was approved by the commission 4-3, with commissioners M. Cameron Howes, Kathleen Thompson and Emily Coyne dissenting. The dissenting commissioners said they would rather support a subcommittee of the parks and recreation board to oversee the park.

MARQUETTE — Winter has hit the area with full force, bringing fun for children, headaches for drivers, beautiful scenery and cold temperatures. Overnight the mercury dropped from 43 to 10 degrees, the lowest it has been in nine months in Marquette, and to five below zero at the Marquette County Airport in Negaunee Township. Sawyer Air Force Base had a low of zero. Almost three inches of snow fell Saturday resulting in hazardous driving. Generally cold temperatures and snow flurries are expected the rest of this week, into Friday, according to meteorologist Fred Mueller.
