Then and Now: Small town Community Building lives up to its name

MICHIGAMME — The Community Building in Michigamme was built in 1937 in what is now the middle of town on Main Street.

Residents say it was built on the site of the former Michigamme House, a boarding house owned by Gus Schewendman.

The building burned down after the firehall, which was it’s neighbor on Main Street to the west burned down.

The firehall was reportedly struck by lightening.

Firefighters were able to get the steamer & model A truck out, but could only use the model A to try and fight the fire. They were unsuccessful.

The two-story community building houses the township’s government offices.

It also has a gym, a stage and a large space on the lower level which is used for everything from a voting center to wedding receptions and other gatherings.

According to the township’s master plan, the building provides residents with a multitude of indoor community recreational opportunites.

“There is an indoor basketball court and various rooms which community members use for indoor recreational activities such as a sewing groupand a cribbage league.”

The Community Building is also open Monday through Friday for residents to access the workout room at their leisure when the building is staffed.
