Kevin Flohe moved to the Upper Peninsula in 2006 to be with then-fiancée, who was born and raised in Negaunee. Flohe said it's hard to believe that it's been nearly 18 years. He said the thing he loves most about the U.P. is the people.
"I have made many lifelong friends here who have truly become more like family to me than friends," Flohe said. "I also love the natural beauty and small-town feel of the area. I've been to many large cities in the U.S., and while it's fun to visit, it's definitely not for me."
In the recent election, Flohe was duly elected to Negaunee City Council due to Timothy King's recent passing. Flohe said he decided to run for city council in 2019 because he wanted to help "revitalize the community and help create opportunities for businesses to invest and young families to remain here and set down roots."
"Thanks to the efforts of Negaunee City Manager Nate Heffron, City Council, Downtown Development Authority, Planning Commission and many others, I believe we are well on our way," he said. "I'm excited to see the progress we've made and I'm looking forward to seeing what the future holds." For his current term on the Negaunee City Council, Flohe wants to continue to see the council's momentum created keep going and continue to create the conditions for the city of Negaunee to "flourish." One large step in that, he said, is the recent certification of Negaunee as a Redevelopment Ready Community.
"A lot of time and effort went into that, and it's something for all of us to be proud of," Flohe said. "Also, the recent makeover of the downtown area along Iron Street and the investments we've made in roads and infrastructure will help give us the capacity we need for economic growth."
