CHAMPION — Eighth graders Shannon Arsenault and Amanda Hereford worked as office aides during some of their lunch hours at the Champion School. Middle school students have the opportunity to work as teacher assistants, library assistants and office aides, along with tutoring elementary school students in a volunteer work program at the school. The program demonstrates student commitment and responsibility, school officials said. The volunteers are usually treated to a pop and pizza party in May.

ISHPEMING – Municipal work crews are in the process of putting up Christmas decorations throughout the city. Edward Farley, superintendent of public works, announced that three and five-man crews have been placing lights and making stringers at the public works warehouse. Approximately 40 wreaths with an equal number of stars will be erected at each of downtown Ishpeming’s intersections to lend an attractive appearance to the area. Over 1,200 lights will illuminate the city from the stringers alone. Farley also stated that a huge evergreen tree would be obtained next week from Mrs. William Lawer, who donated one from her property. The evergreen, expected to be about 40 feet high, will be set up in the same spot as last year-near the statue of “Old Ish” in the city square. City workers are expected to finish the task of erecting Christmas decorations by Dec. 2.
