BIG BAY– It didn’t take the Drury family of Big Bay long to harvest some venison during the 1993 firearm deer season. Charlie Drury scored on a trophy buck just 9 minutes after sunrise on opening day of the season. AT 8 a.m., he brought down a magnificent 200-pound, 10-pointer. He shot the whitetail from about 60 yards with a .30-06-caliber rifle. The cooperative deer ran more than 100 feet toward Charlie’s nearby truck before collapsing. According to the “buck pole” at the Big Bay IGA, Drury’s 10-pointer was the first buck of the season taken in the area. It didn’t take his dad, David Drury Sr., long to match his son’s point total with a 10-pointer he killed at about 10 a.m. Monday. The elder Drury’s buck weighed about 150 pounds. As to where the Drury’s bagged their bucks: “Let’s just say northern Marquette County,” Charlie said with a grin. “You know, on second thought, you could say it was somewhere in Dickinson County if you want.” Hunting success was good in the Big Bay area with 20 deer listed at the IGA by the end of opening day.
