MARQUETTE — After two, one-point regular season losses to the Traverse City Trojans, the Redettes turned the tables and cruised to a 45-34 victory in the Class A district championship here Friday night. “Our defense has been the key all season long and once again it came through,” Marquette Coach Tim Downs said. Senior guard Korie Garrow was the defensive leader for Marquette as she notched five steals and grabbed eight rebounds for the 18-4 Redettes. The Redette defense took control and held the Trojans to just six more points in the first half as Marquette raced to a commanding 29-9 halftime lead behind 10 points from Junior guard Colleen Michelson. After Garrow grabbed one of her five steals, she found Sarah Heikkila for a break-away layup which gave the Redettes a 39-16 lead going into the fourth quarter. Marquette now advances to East Kent High School in Grand Rapids to face the Rockford district winner at 6 p.m. Monday.

MARQUETTE — The U.S. 41 and M-28 bypass in Marquette begins at the west city limits, meeting with the existing four-lane pavement on W. Washington St. there, and following the Whetstone Brook route, linking with the highway on S. Front St. at a point south of Palms St. The bypass will eliminate the serious bottleneck caused by the right angle intersection at the corner of Front and Washington Streets. State Highway Commissioner John C. Mackie will be the principal speaker at a luncheon at the Hotel Northland tomorrow noon commemorating the opening of the Marquette bypass. The luncheon, arranged by the Marquette Chamber of Commerce, will feature Don Pearce of Marquette as master of ceremonies, which will be broadcast at 1:15 from WDMJ, The Mining Journal station. Marquette Mayor C. Fred Rydholm will extend the city’s greetings at the luncheon. The Rev. Glen G. Weber, superintendent of the Bishop Baraga High School, will deliver the benediction. Harlan Larson, president of the chamber, will introduce Marcia Williams, Miss Marquette; and Mary Ellen McGuire, Miss Cliffs Ridge. State Rep. Dominic Jacobetti, D-Negaunee, will attend the luncheon program.
