MARQUETTE —“Banjo” Holsworth scored twice and goaltender Josh Hatinger made 11 saves to lead the Bonanza Squirt AA hockey team of Marquette to a 4-0 win over Abner’s of Sault Ste. Marie Sunday. In the first game, Abner’s won, 2-1. Bonanza’s lone goal was notched by Andy Freeborn. Marquette’s Mike Grassel made 14 saves for Coach Dave Moree’s 12-9 team. At Escanaba Saturday, the Johnson’s Sport Shop Bantam A hockey team swept Escanaba’s Bantam AA Johnson’s Distributing, 11-2 and 6-3. In the opener, Jim Duckwal netted a hat trick, while Dan Nygard, George Stien, and Jeremiah Haile scored two goals each. Goalie Aaron Winslow made 26 saves. In the second game, Duckwall netted four goals and Tim Caden made 11 saves for 6-4-0 Marquette.

MARQUETTE ­– Two registered Holstein cows owned by the Marquette State Prison have established a new production record. A report from the Holstein-Friesian Association of America includes recently completed official lactation summaries. Marquette Traverse Fobes, a four-year-old, produced 18,200 pounds of milk and 748 pounds of butterfat in 305 days. Marquette Burke Ona, a three-year-old, had 18,700 pounds of milk and 682 pounds of butterfat in 305 days. According to the national Holstein organization, the new production figures compare to an annual output of 7,211 pounds of milk and 270 pounds of butterfat by the average U.S. dairy cow. Michigan State University supervised the weighing and testing of the Holstein records as part of the breed’s nation-wide testing programs.
