Kognisjon Bryggeri ale honors local tradition

MARQUETTE–Patrons of Kognisjon Bryggeri Brewery can now honor the long legacy of skiing in the U.P. with a new ale.

K-Point Red Ale is a “liquid tribute” to the rich history of ski jumping in the Upper Peninsula. Made in collaboration with the Ishpeming Ski Club, it’s also a drink celebrating their 137th Annual Ski Jumping Tournament.

According to the Ishpeming Ski Club, a release event for the new ale at Kognisjon in Marquette on Friday was an “extraordinary success.”

Each year, people travel from around the country in order to participate and witness the notorious ski jumping celebration that the ale was brewed to commemorate. The ultimate mission of the club, its sponsors and organizers is to put more kids on skis and preserve the past, present and future of ski jumping.

The i

naugural K-point beer also honors ski-jumper Tom Sodergren, who today volunteers with the Ishpeming Ski Club.

“This special brew also pays homage to the unwavering passion of Mr. Tom ‘Sodapop’ Sodergren, whose lifelong dedication to the sport and the Ishpeming Ski Club has played a pivotal role in preserving ski jumping for future generations,” said ISC Vice President Peter Copenhaver.

According to Kognisjon’s Facebook page, K-POINT is a classic red ale ripe for the season. “A deep malty base made with a few crystal malts of different levels and some toasty malt for cohesion. Hopped with East Kent Golding to firmly land it in the style’s ancestral home. We fermented it with a Norwegian kveik strain to bring some of that Nordic quality to the beer.”

Six packs of the ale can be purchased at participating stores in Marquette while supplies last. It is also expected to be on tap at the Ishpeming Ski Jumping Tournament on Jan. 19-21.
