War of 1812 talk scheduled

MARQUETTE — The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center is showing a virtual presentation of the Historical Society of Michigan’s “History Hounds.” Historian David Curtis Skaggs will examine decisive victories of the War of 1812 on the Great Lakes.

The viewing will occur at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Jamrich Hall 1313. It is free and open to the public.

“William Henry Harrison, Oliver Hazard Perry and the War of 1812” looks at the cooperation displayed between Major General William Henry Harrison and Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry. Their leadership and strategy allowed the U.S. to regain control of the Lower Peninsula and is a unique example of what modern military parlance calls “combined operations.”

Skaggs is a professor emeritus of history at Bowling Green State University and a retired colonel in the Army Reserves. He wrote thirteen books, including “A Signal Victory: The Lake Erie Campaign, 1812-1813” and “Thomas Macdonough: Master of Command in the Early U.S. Navy.”
