The people of Superiorland

2 min read

For Don Moore, preserving history is a labor of love. He lives less than a block from the Michigamme Museum, which he helped to found. The building and grounds have everything from turn-of-the-century logging tools to a display that features the film "Anatomy of a Murder" -- including a lifesize cutout of Jimmy Stewart. Moore worked in a Ford factory in Detroit for several decades before retiring and moving back to Michigamme. He also proudly showed off uniforms of Michigamme military veterans, including his own. His passion for the museum and all that is in it is profound. "We did a lot of research before we started this thing," Moore said. "We visited other museums as well as the Marquette Regional History Center to learn how to display things. It wasn't just me, there was a team of us, and we wanted to do it right." In order to pay for the building next to the museum, which houses the township's 1900s-era horse-drawn steamer, Moore collected cans and bottles. He says he still collects them, but someone else takes them back to the store. The steamer is currently in the care of the Michigamme Historical Museum, which is open from Memorial Day through the end of September. It is located at 110 W. Main St. (Journal photo by Lisa Bowers)
