BIG BAY — A 4,000 gallon gasoline tank near Big Bay Harbor was removed from the ground last week and several small holes found near the top of the tank. The tank, owned by Marquette County, serviced boaters operating out of the harbor. It was found to have leaked what initial estimates suggest was a small amount of fuel into the ground, prompting its removal. Soil samples were taken and sent to an independent laboratory for testing. Once it’s determined how much soil is contaminated and must be removed, the county will meat with the state Department of Natural Resources on a remediation plan.

MARQUETTE — State conservation crews are working full time planting hatchery trout in upper peninsula streams before winter sets in. Louis Sauheitle, foreman of the Cherry Creek fish hatchery near Marquette, has been in Luce county during the past week supervising the distribution of trout in the lakes and streams aided by local conservation officers. Luce county received the last of its quota Wednesday, making a total of more than 169,000 fish planted this season. An example of the work of the fish distribution division was seen when the last load of trout was received at Newberry. Sauheitle arrived in Newberry with a two and one-half ton truck loaded with two tons of water and 350 pounds of trout in a special transportation unit. This unit consisted of four tanks, each with its own automatic circulation system and water pump, each carrying 4,000 trout. This load of fish was taken to the Deer Park forest reserve, where the fish were transferred into 10-gallon cans and taken to Trout Lake and Two Heart River.

Starting at $3.23/week.
