HOUGHTON — Houghton-Portage Township District teachers have voted to strike if the upcoming mediation efforts fail. Apparently, some Houghton students have believed the action imminent for some time, and strike rumors have filtered home to parents. Teachers in the district have sported buttons proclaiming they are working without contracts, and one educator contended students jumped to conclusions based on the “no contract” talk. Teachers in seven area districts are still bargaining, and have been working without contracts since August.

MARQUETTE — The Finnish National Players performed before a capacity house Thursday evening in the Kaufman Auditorium when they presented Aleksis Kivi’s “Nummisuutarit” (The Village Cobbler). As early as 6 p.m., people from distant areas in the Upper Peninsula were crowding in the lobby of the auditorium. The overwhelming success of the Finnish Players this year, and an equally well-attended performance of the Finnish Singers last year, gave evidence that these performances have become an annual occasion, not only for the enjoyment of Finnish culture, but also as a time for reunion of Finnish people with those of their native land who perform for them. Mayor Fred Rydholm extended a welcome to the group in Finnish and English.
