NORWAY — Paper and forest product manufacturers have had a hard time overcoming a reputation as businesses that haphazardly strip the woodlands for profit. But a national programed launched this year may change a few minds. Endorsed by U.S. Secretary of the Interior, “Special Places in the Forest” was developed by Champion International Corp. to set aside sites of historic, environmental, geological, recreational or scenic significance. Near Wildcat Canyon Creek in Marquette County, Champion has set aside 30 acres within a commercial forest to preserve a stand of century-old white pine.

MUNISING — A Munising bird hunter came out of the woods with a story of hand-to-hand combat with a bear and a scratch on his face to prove it. The man, 23, told conservation officers he downed a partridge while hunting off M-94 near Munising. When the bird fell his dog kept on barking – at a bear standing 15 feet away. He shot the bear and the bear went down. The Munising man said he then walked over to the bear and at that moment his dog bit the bear, which jumped up and struggled to get away. With one swipe of his paw the bear scratched him across the face before limping off into the woods.
