MARQUETTE — Increasing numbers of Marquette County drivers are buckling up, mirroring a statewide trend, according to the Michigan State Police. A September survey showed 81 percent of drivers and 89 percent of passengers were wearing seatbelts in Marquette County, the highest rate of compliance in the Upper Peninsula, said Sgt. Gary Taskila of the Traffic Services Division in Negaunee. The survey followed a month of increased seatbelt law enforcement and a year-long statewide public awareness campaign. A recent survey of intersections statewide found 64 percent of motorists wearing seatbelts, compared with 57 percent in 1992. The 64 percent usage rate means Michigan qualifies for $1 million in federal funding for programs to further encourage safety belt use.
