MARQUETTE — Marquette teachers and support staff settled their two-week strike for a health care package that will almost pay for a 2 percent pay raise. Marquette was one of two school districts in the state to go on strike this fall, while about 160 others started work without contracts. Although school administrators confirmed terms of the contract this morning, they expressed disappointment in the early release of details because neither the Marquette school board nor the MAEA has ratified the contract yet. The MAEA represents the district’s 261 teachers. The new health care package under MESSA — owned by the Michigan Education Association — includes medical, dental and vision coverage.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A Marquette man, alias Thomas, 48, walked into a newspaper office here today and said he escaped from a Michigan prison 13 years ago, while serving a term for murder. Prison authorities at Lansing told the Cleveland News by telephone that a parole office would be sent there to return Thomas to Michigan. Thomas said he was prodded by his conscience to make a clean breast of his past and revealed to his wife and her children by a former marriage his decision to give himself up. He said he was a working man wo had gone straight since he left the prison. Thomas escaped from Marquette prison in 1920, according to prison records here. He was serving a life term for murder. W.R. Doeil, warden of the Marquette prison, said yesterday the prison records did not contain any details concerning the escape, other than the statement that he made a getaway.
