ESCANABA — Professionals in forestry and wildlife are exploring ways to strike a balance between deer herd management and forest management. How to benefit both resources will be the subject of a conference Thursday and Friday sponsored by the Michigan Society of American Foresters and The Wildlife Society. The group will look at interactions between forests and deer, and study the economic impact of balanced the resources. Specialists from the state Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Forest Service, Michigan State University, and the Upper Peninsula Whitetails Association will discuss deer/forest interaction and deer biology, habitat, and carrying capacity.

HANCOCK — Figures released from Mrs. Stuart Allen of the registrar’s office indicate that enrollment again has increased at Suomi College. The enrollment this fall is the largest in the 67-year history of the college. Principal reason for increased enrollment is that over 20 per cent of those students in attendance this year are from out of state. Illinois has the largest number, 15, in attendance; 12 other states are represented on campus this fall as well as two from Finland. Of the 223 students enrolled, 123 will be freshman and 80 will be sophomores, making another new all-time high in sophomore enrollment.
