ESCANABA — High winds Thursday whipped a huge painting tarp covering the Escanaba water tower like a flag. Winds gusting up to 40 mph in the afternoon snapped some of the securing brackets and tore anchors from the ground, keeping the paint crew busy until dark getting the cover under control. Water Plant Superintendent Warren Isaacson praised workers from Bosk Paint and Sandblast who braved the high winds for hours attempting to get the tarp under control. “Bosk’s crew did a good job. There was potential for the tarp to hit some power lines.” Isaacson said. “When the tarp finally came down, everything came down within the fenced area — it didn’t even hit the fence.”

MARQUETTE — Any county potato grower, even “back yard farmers” may exhibit potatoes for judging at the Marquette County Harvest Festival, Melvin N. Nyquist, county extension director, said. Nyquist reminded Marquette County potato growers that all exhibits must be entered Wednesday, October 8th, between 6 and 10 PM. Any person in the county, even those who grow a few rows of potatoes in their back yard, may exhibit in the “adult 32 tuber class”. Exhibitors should select their 32 most uniform and true to type potatoes. They should be brushed or cleaned with a dry cloth, and wrapped in paper to prevent greening, Nyquist said.
