Let Freedom Read! Peter White Public Library celebrates Banned Books Week this week with programs and other activities. Back by popular demand this year is Banned Books Bingo--and you have until Dec. 1 to participate. Simply pick up a Banned Books Bingo card at the PWPL Circulation Desk and get to reading. You may even create your own card! Once you have a Banned Books Bingo, return the card to PWPL to be entered to win a Snowbound Books gift card. Here are some of the titles you'll find on the age-appropriate cards:
Youth Picture Books Ages 8 and Under: Something Happened in Our Town by Mariann Celano follows two families as they talk about a police shooting in their community. The story aims to answer children's questions about traumatic events, and to help children identify and counter racial injustice in their own lives.
Youth Ages 9-13 - Drama by Reina Telgemeier – Callie the set designer for the drama department stage crew, and this year she's determined to create a set worthy of Broadway on a middle-school budget. But how can she, when she doesn't know much about carpentry, ticket sales are down, and the crew members are having trouble working together? Not to mention the onstage AND offstage drama that occurs once the actors are chosen. And when two cute brothers enter the picture, things get even crazier!
Teens Bingo Card #1 -The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie - Junior is a budding cartoonist growing up on the Spokane Indian Reservation. Determined to take his future into his own hands, Junior leaves his troubled school on the rez to attend an all-white farm town high school where the only other Indian is the school mascot.
Teens Bingo Card #2 - This One Summer by Mariko Tamaki (Graphic Novel) – Every summer, Rose goes with her mom and dad to a lake house in Awago Beach and Rosie's friend Windy is always there, too. But this summer is different. Rose's mom and dad won't stop fighting, and when Rose and Windy seek a distraction from the drama, they find themselves with a whole new set of problems.
Teens Bingo Card #3 - The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo - This novel-in-verse introduces readers to Xiomara Batista. She feels unheard and unable to hide in her Harlem neighborhood. But Xiomara has plenty she wants to say, and she pours all her frustration and passion onto the pages of a leather notebook, reciting the words to herself like prayers--especially after she catches feelings for a boy, who her family can never know about.
Adults Bingo Card #1 - Lawn Boy by Jonathan Evison - For Mike Munoz, life has been a whole lot of waiting for something to happen. Though he tries to get his foot the rung of that ladder to success, he can't seem to get a break. Adults Bingo Card #2 - A Stolen Life: A Memoir by Jaycee Dugard - On 10 June 1991, eleven-year-old Jaycee Dugard was abducted from a school bus stop within sight of her home in Tahoe, California. It was the last her family and friends saw of her for over eighteen years. In August 2009, Dugard, an unusual incident sparked an investigation that led to her rescue. Jaycee opens up about what she experienced and her year after being found.
Adults Bingo Card #3 - Beloved by Toni Morrison - Sethe was born a slave and escaped to Ohio, but eighteen years later she is still not free.
