MARQUETTE – A community forum on the Sawyer Air Force Base closure will be hosted this evening in Marquette by the Northern Great Lakes Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The forum’ theme “Impact and Response: The Closing of KI Sawyer,” will begin with a light buffet and feature an economic impact presentation by Mike Skytta, executive vice president and chief operations officer of MFC First National Bank.

MARQUETTE — Overseas grain shipments from Great Lakes ports approached the record 1962 levels in the first seven months of this year, the Great Lakes commission reports. More than 83.23 million bushels were shipped or approved for shipment by the end of July, the most recent figures available, commission research director Albert J. Ballert said Thursday. This was about 2.7 million bushels less than for the same period last year, he said. Tonnage increased slightly over last year.
