SANDS — The Marquette County Fair opened today for its fourth year at the fairgrounds in Sands. Rain is possible tonight but clearing by Friday evening turning partly cloudy on Saturday and Sunday, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Dave Guenther. “We’re praying for sunshine,” said Wanda Bergdahl, fair secretary. Bergdahl said the fair board hopes to exceed last year’s attendance of about 25,000 people.

ISHPEMING — The Lake Michigamme Boat Club has obtained 40 acres of land at the west end of Lake Michigamme, known as Hardwood Point, where a new clubhouse is being erected. It was announced today by William Walters Jr. of Ishpeming, chairman of the building committee. Ground has already been broken for the new building and the work is expected to be completed in about six weeks. The structure will be 40 feet long and 30 feet wide and will have a 10 foot porch on three sides of the building.
