Police arrest 2 for break-in

By Journal Staff

NEGAUNEE — Two people were arrested in connection with a reported break-in that took place early Saturday morning at a Negaunee residence.

The Negaunee Police Department said in a news release that at about 3:52 a.m., it responded to a report of shots fired outside a residence. During an investigation of the incident, it was determined that a 35-year-old white man attempted to break into a residence through a window.

The owner of the residence, a 60-year-old white woman, noticed the man attempting to break in. The man then shot one round at the woman, who returned fire, shooting a round at the intruder.

No one was injured during the altercation, the NPD said.

The woman then locked herself in her bedroom and called 911. After officers arrived, the man was located later in the basement of the residence where he was detained and arrested.

A 33-year-old white woman who was related to the man was arrested later as well.

The NPD was assisted by the Michigan State Police, the MSP Forensic Laboratory and the Ishpeming Police Department.
