Alger Access

Down memory lane with Mary Jane

Not really knowing what to put in my column this week, I came across an advertisement on Facebook for those interested in a marine clean-up at Bayshore Park in Munising.

The Alger County Conservation District, as part of an organizational effort with federal and regional agencies were seeking volunteers or even bystanders to attend.

After seeing all the interesting items pulled out of the Marquette Harbor on TV, I was curious to see what was beneath the surface of our own Munising Bay.

My daughter and I got down to the park in the early stages of clean-up and as curious bystanders were greeted by Christy Foye, Alger County District Program Coordinator. She gladly explained that day’s dive and the progression so far in cleaning up underwater debris in the pier area (and is being credited for supplying a couple of the photos submitted here.) In our short time there we saw many tires of all sizes and smaller personal items retrieved.

Living next to one of the most beautiful and cleanest lakes in the world is such a treasure and something we can easily take for granted. As a child, as far back to the 1930’s I have great memories at Bayshore Park, even jumping off the end of the pier and we did have lifeguards there to watch in the mid 1940’s.
