MUNISING — The Forest Service is considering improvements to four campgrounds in the Munising District of the Hiawatha National Forest, said Assistant Ranger Dick Anderson. The four campgrounds are Bay Furnace, Island Lake and Widewaters, all in Alger County, and Pete’s Lake in western Schoolcraft County. Possible improvements to Bay Furnace include adding electricity to some campsites, installing flush toilets and showers, and building a picnic area shelter. Being studied for all the campgrounds are barrier-free outbuildings and pressurized water systems. Those changes will put the campgrounds in compliance with recently enacted laws on handicapped access and public drinking water supplies, Anderson said. Funding for the projects wouldn’t be available until at least 1995. The Forest Service is soliciting public comments on the proposed improvements until Sept. 1.

MARQUETTE — Marquette residents will have a chance to take a ride over the city and Presque Isle this week in an all metal Hamilton seaplane, piloted by C.S. McBrien, of Elgin, Ill., who came here Friday from Houghton, where during the summer he carried passengers and tourists between that city and Isle Royale. The Hamilton plane which is all metal with a 420 horsepower Wasp motor carries four passengers and a crew of two. Cooper Gohld is the mechanic. The plane is owned by the Associated Aviation Company. McBrien is a transport pilot and has been flying since 1918. He flew in the North Bombing Squadron naval air service overseas during the World War. The plane recently came to Marquette from Houghton with four passengers, including Phil Spear, Jr. The ship was originally used in South America and back to the United States. The base of the plane during its stay in Marquette will be near the Coast Guard station at the foot of Ridge Street. Further information may be had at the base or at the Upper Michigan Motors garage. It is planned to take passengers up today and tomorrow and all during fair week.
