Summer Reading has come to a close at the Peter White Public Library, but that doesn't mean we stop reading! There were many great books that our patrons have picked up and enjoyed this summer. Here are a few of those titles.
"Happy Place" by Emily Henry finds Harriet and Wyn in a predicament. They had been a couple since college and all of a sudden they weren't. They broke up 5 months ago and haven't told their best friends. When Harriet and Wyn find themselves at the Maine cottage with their best friends for a last vacation there (the cottage is up for sale), it cannot be that hard to fake their romance for a little while longer, or can it?
In "Lessons in Chemistry" by Bonnie Garmus, chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman and doesn't pretend to be either. For the most part her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute don't take a very scientific approach of equality. However, Calvin Evans, the lonely, brilliant, grudgeholder falls in love with Elizabeth's mind and chemistry comes easily. But life is unpredictable and Elizabeth winds up not only a single mother but also host of an unusual TV cooking show. As her following grows, not everyone is happy as she is daring women not to just cook but also to change the status quo. With a great cast of supporting characters, this is a hilarious, original read with a vibrant main character.
"Saturday Night at the Lakeside Supper Club" by J. Ryan Stradal is a story of a couple from two very different restaurant families in rustic Minnesota, and the legacy of love and tragedy, of hardship and hope, that unites and divides them. The Lakeside Supper Club has been in her family for decades, and while Mariel's grandmother embraced the business, seeing it as a saving grace, Florence never took to it. When Mariel inherited the restaurant, skipping Florence, it created a rift between mother and daughter that never quite healed. In the aftermath of a devastating tragedy, Ned and Mariel lose almost everything they hold dear, and the hard-won victories of each family hang in the balance. With their dreams dashed, can one fractured family find a way to rebuild despite their losses, and will the Lakeside Supper Club be their salvation?
"The Housemaid" by Freida McFadden is the perfect read for fans of Ruth Ware and Lisa Jewell. After past transgressions Millie has hit rock bottom; no job, no place to live, just her and her car. Until she thinks she hits the jackpot when finding a housemaid job for a wealthy family. After being hired things go from amazing and comfortable to bizarre fast. This fast paced thriller will have you wanting more. And there is more! There is a sequel to this book called "The Housemaid's Secret" you might want to try after this one.
The Peter White Public Library had great participation from the community for the 2023 Adult Summer Reading Program. Over 750 books were read and rated by our patrons over the months of June and July. Thanks also to the Friends of the Peter White Public Library for sponsoring 2023 Adult Summer Reading Program.
